Abridged Profile

Jemimah Timothy Ekanem is a Professor of Agricultural Extension with a Rural Sociology and Development specialty, who teaches in the Department of Agricultural Economics and Extension, and currently the Dean, Faculty of Agriculture, Obio Akpa Campus, Akwa Ibom State University (AKSU), Akwa Ibom State Nigeria.

She obtained her Professional Training at the University of Uyo (Uniuyo), Uyo, Akwa Ibom State where she graduated as the best final year student in the Department with, a Bachelor of Agriculture Degree in Agricultural Economics and Extension (Second Class Honours Upper Division) in 1998; a Master’s degree in Agricultural Extension in 2008 and proceeded to the Michael Okpara University of Agriculture (MOUA) Umudike, Abia State for a Doctor of Philosophy Degree in the Department of Agricultural Extension and Rural Sociology and obtained same in 2013. 

She has been involved in Teaching and Research in Agricultural communication, Extension Education, Rural Sociology, Extension Administration, Community Development, Technology development, dissemination, and transfer, etc. since 2004 starting from the Defunct College of Agriculture, Obio Akpa. She has served the University in many capacities; from the Pioneer Coordinator of the Internship programme for the Faculty of Agriculture for Three (3) Academic sessions (2014-2017). She is the immediate past Director of Quality Assurance, Akwa Ibom State University. 

Prof. (Mrs) Ekanem is a member of various Professional bodies; Agricultural Extension Society of Nigeria (AESON), Farm Management Association of Nigeria (FAMAN); Rural Sociological Association of Nigeria (RuSAN), Association of International Agricultural and Extension Education (AIAEE), Nigerian Forum for Agricultural Advisory Services (NIFAAS) and Rural Sociological Society (RSS). She has attended over Thirty (30) academic conferences/workshops nationally and internationally and has published in International and National Scholarly journals with over Sixty (60) Publications to her credit. She has co-authored 2 books and written 5 book chapters and a monograph for Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC), Port Harcourt while serving as an Intern. 

She co-founded an interdisciplinary organization committed to the research and practice of communication and sustainable community development, the Society for Community and Communication Development Research (SCCDR) and serves as the Managing editor of the Journal of Community and Communication Research (JCCR) since 2016 till date. She has also served as a Reviewer for some journals including the departmental and faculty of Agriculture Journals of AKSU. 

Prof. (Mrs) Ekanem won the best paper and third best paper awards at Corporate Social Responsibility and Sustainable Development conferences held in Dubai, UAE, and Addis Ababa, Ethiopia in 2015 and 2017 respectively. 

By way of giving back to the society, she is extensively involved in community service. Behind the success of such services is the Jemitim Foundation which offers a platform for promoting girl child education and rewarding sterling academic performances.

Prof. (Mrs.) Ekanem who hails from Ibesikpo Asutan is happily married to an Nsit Ubium-born Accountant and the union is blessed with Five Children.
