CITATION OF PROF. MRS. JEMIMAH TIMOTHY EKANEM

Agric. (Hons.) UniUyo; M.Sc. (UniUyo); Ph.D. (MOUAU)

The uniqueness of an individual's story is designed by God because, before one is conceived, God already knew and had ordained him or her for greatness in consonance with His will and purpose (Jeremiah 1:5; 29:11).

BIRTH AND PARENTAGE

Professor (Mrs.) Jemimah Timothy Ekanem was born on 15th May 1971, in Ibesikpo, Ibesikpo Asutan Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria. She is the first child in a family of eleven children born to the late Chief Effiong John Udo Ekong and Mrs. Ikwo Effiong Ekong, both of Ikot Ideh Akpakpan, Ibesikpo. She hails from the renowned Nung Udoekong Udo Offiong extended family, a lineage distinguished for integrity, industry, and the pursuit of excellence. As the firstborn, she embraced responsibility early in life, developing qualities of diligence, discipline, resilience, and leadership that have continued to define her academic and professional journey.

Her quest for knowledge began at St. Peter's Primary School, Mbierebe Akpawat, where she obtained her First School Leaving Certificate in 1982. She thereafter attended the School of Arts and Science, Uyo, earning the West African Senior School Certificate in 1988. She became one of the pioneering academics absorbed into the newly established Akwa Ibom State University in 2012. She rose steadily through the ranks: Lecturer II (2008), Lecturer I (2013), Senior Lecturer (2016), Associate Professor (2019), and ultimately Professor of Agricultural Extension (Rural Sociology and Development) in 2022, becoming the first female Professor at Akwa Ibom State University. A significant milestone was her engagement as a Research Intern with the Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) between 2009 and 2010, an experience that shaped her doctoral research and inspired a substantial body of scholarly work on rural livelihoods, agricultural interventions, and community development.

At the apex of university governance, she currently serves as the first female Head of the Obio Akpa Campus (2025 to date) and Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture (2024 to date), providing executive leadership that shapes both academic direction and administrative guidance. She also chairs the Reconstituted Administrative Panel of Inquiry and serves on the Pension Committee and the Committee on Review of Conditions of Service, placing her at the very center of staff welfare, justice, and institutional reform. In the critical domain of quality assurance, her legacy is already firmly established. As Director of Quality Assurance (2020–2024), she led the development of mechanisms that enhanced academic standards and institutional effectiveness across the University. She served as Staff Adviser to the Agricultural Economics and Extension Students' Association (AEESA) from 2015 to 2021, and as Matron of the same association from 2021 to 2023, providing continuous guidance to successive generations of agriculture students. She also served as Chairman of the AKSU Academic Staff Union Election Committee (2024) and Secretary of the same committee (2016), demonstrating her commitment to democratic governance within the University community. In staff welfare and cooperative development, she provided transformative leadership as Vice President (2016–2018) and later President (2019–2022) of the AKSU Academic Staff Multi-Purpose Cooperative Society, steering her colleagues' financial and social wellbeing through a critical period of the University's growth. Her service is not merely a record of positions held; it is a history of dedicated and passionate institutional care.

SERVICE TO COMMUNITY AND HUMANITY

Professor Ekanem firmly believes that the University exists to serve society. She has been involved in numerous community development initiatives to improve livelihoods, promote agricultural innovation, empower women and youths, and strengthen rural institutions. Her research findings have informed and influenced development interventions and policy discussions on agricultural extension, climate change adaptation, food security, and sustainable rural development, bridging the gap between the University and the communities it serves. Her commitment to the vulnerable extends beyond research into direct, personal action, exemplified by the Jemitim Foundation for Girl Child Educational Empowerment, which she founded. Through the Foundation, she has established and sustained a merit-based scholarship programme for deserving female undergraduates at Akwa Ibom State University, providing financial support to outstanding students and easing the burden of university education. With each successive edition, the Foundation has expanded its impact, alongside complementary initiatives such as digital skills training. In the recently concluded third edition of the programme, the Foundation presented ten scholarship awards to deserving female undergraduates. This milestone reflects the Foundation's growing impact and translates her vision of human capital development into tangible opportunities for young women to thrive.

KINGDOM SERVICE

While her academic accomplishments are remarkable, her greatest fulfillment comes from her unwavering commitment to serving God. An ordained minister of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), she has served in various capacities, including parish, zonal, and provincial roles, and currently serves as the Regional Choir Director of RCCG Region 57, where she has nurtured choristers, coordinated regional worship programmes, and inspired excellence in music ministry. To her, faith is not separate from scholarship; it is the moral compass that guides her teaching, leadership, research, and relationships.

PERSONAL INTERESTS AND RECREATIONS

Beyond the rigours of academia and administration, Professor Ekanem finds deep joy in music ministry, mentoring young people, and nurturing her family. She is passionate about worship, choral music, and the spiritual development of others. She cherishes quiet moments of reflection, values fellowship with her church community, and takes pride in creating a warm, God-centered home. She also enjoys singing, playing Scrabble, dancing, and imparting knowledge. These pursuits, though outside the formal demands of the university, provide the balance and spiritual grounding that have sustained her through decades of scholarly and service-oriented life.

Professor Ekanem is happily married to Mr. Timothy Effiong Ekanem of Ndiya Ikot Ukap, Nsit Ubium Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, a seasoned administrator and director in the Bursary Department of Akwa Ibom State University. Their marriage has been marked by mutual respect, unwavering support, and shared values. She fondly acknowledges her husband as an amiable partner whose encouragement, sacrifices, and steadfast support she has relied on throughout her academic journey. Despite her demanding responsibilities as a scholar, administrator, mentor, and church leader, she has remained deeply committed to nurturing a stable, God-fearing, close-knit family.

Professor (Mrs.) Jemimah Timothy Ekanem's life shows that greatness is not defined merely by titles earned or positions held, but by lives transformed, knowledge created, institutions strengthened, and the enduring legacy left behind. Her journey as a little JIMA, from the quiet community of Ikot Ideh Akpakpan to the rank of University Professor, testifies to the power of vision, perseverance, discipline, faith, and God's abiding grace.
